Outgoing tourism secretary says Philippines needs major airport in Manila and not in Clark

Outgoing Department of Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said the Philippines needs a huge airport to support the growing number of tourist arrivals in the country.

"Airport, that's critical.... We do need a one big international airport in Manila, that is being discussed," Jimenez said in an interview on national television.

The outgoing Cabinet official added that airports are critical as tourists cannot arrive in the Philippines "any other way than by air."

"Private sector enterprise, private sectors must win the bid to run our airport so that we will have business outlook," the DOT chief said.

In 2014, San Miguel Corp. proposed to build a $10-billion airport along a reclaimed are in Manila Bay as an alternative for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, however, the government disapproved the proposal.

Meanwhile, SMC announced earlier in May that it will revive its Manila Bay International Airport proposal and present it to the Duterte administration, to address the prevailing air congestion problems of the country, boost trade opportunities, and promote tourism.

"Your quickest response to demand that is already there is to keep expanding the airport in Manila. I think Clark will work better in intermediate feature," Jimenez noted.

According to a data from DOT, the country posted tourism revenues of P18.92 billion in the first four months of the year and recorded 2.073 million tourist arrivals.

Jimenez noted that the next Tourism secretary should choose key areas such as airports to develop.
"You tend to cluster your best offerings around a gateway," he added.
